Dear Colleagues,

We invite you to participate in the virtual Satellite Symposium on ECMO of the World Congress of Anesthesiologists
“An update on ECMO in anesthesiology and intensive care”

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation – ECMO – has gained significant popularity since the A/H1N1 influenza pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has raised even greater interest in this technique and numerous reports proved its efficacy and safety. However, the use of ECMO is not limited to pneumonia – it is also a viable option in the management of circulatory failure, post-resuscitation care or support in the periprocedural period in numerous surgical interventions. This one-day educational event gathered renowned international experts. It comprises of 5 sessions containing up-to-date and practical considerations on the use of ECMO in acute respiratory failure including ARDS associated with COVID-19 and of the other origin as well as the acute circulatory failure. Crucial aspects of integration of ECMO with the other techniques used in critically ill patients, technical aspects of cannulation, anticoagulation, and management of complications will also be covered.
